Eight Things To Do In Winter In Cornwall
Frost-bitten coastal paths. Snoozy sunrises. Heart warming local delicacies. Winter in Cornwall is a magical time of year. We’ve come up with eight wonderful things to do during winter in Cornwall that’ll keep you occupied come rain or shine.
1. Let your pup run wild on the beach
One of our favourite things about winter in Cornwall is the fact that the dog bans on beaches are lifted! Your pooches can roam wild and free across some of Cornwall’s most popular stretches of sand. We’re sure this will get the bark of approval from dogs all across the county.
2. Cook hearty homemade dishes
Wholesome, hearty and moreish. Cornish cuisine in the colder months is all about comfort and nostalgia. Fuel up on beautifully filling food and try one of our Greenbank recipes. Or join us for relaxed fine dining at the Water’s Edge.
3. Taste Cornwall’s warming hot chocolates
While Cornwall might be well-known for its selection of creamy ice creams, many don’t kn0w the county also has an excellent hot chocolate offering in the winter months. If you’re looking for something with a quirky twist, head to popular cafes like Swanpool Beach or Poldhu, who are open all year-round and specialise in luxuriously loaded hot chocolate beverages. If you’re after an indulgent chocolatey treat, then we recommend heading to Slice who have become known for their dreamy hot chocolates with extra-large marshmallows.
4. Soak up some local culture
From art galleries to historical museums and National Trust properties, Cornwall is brimming with things to learn. Spend a day infatuated with a part of Cornish culture, whether that’s a visit to the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, Tate Art Gallery in St Ives or Truro Cathedral. There are hundreds of spots both indoors and outside to broaden your knowledge.
5. Explore the Cornish coast
Embrace the winter chill, wrap up warm and head to your favourite beach for a blustery walk. Guaranteed to put some colour in your cheeks, a wind-whipped coastal path is the best place for a seaside adventure. Also, winter is the perfect time to catch some awesome storms. Experience the colossal power of the ocean and mother nature with a (cautious) walk or drive to some of the more rugged coastal spots. Nothing beats sitting in a warm car with a piping hot pasty or a flask of tea whilst watching the foamy waves smash against the headland.
6. Plan a Cornish Winter Getaway
We know winter can feel a tad bleak at times. But we think a visit to our postcard-perfect harbour view hotel is just the tonic for those winter blues. Stay with us this season with rooms for two from £119, by booking onto our Cornish Winter Getaway and enjoy a hearty breakfast every morning of your stay and a scrummy cream tea, just to sweeten the deal! Indulge in a mini break away from the everyday hustle and bustle to unwind by the riverside, for a slice of unhurried Cornish pampering.
7. Rise and shine with a winter sunrise
Cornish sunrises are well worth getting out of bed for. The crisp chill in the air, wispy clouds of condensation with every exhale and glimmering sunrises ascending over stunning waterside scenery. The darker mornings mean there’s no need to set an early alarm to catch the break of dawn. And we know we’re biased… but Greenbank sunrises are utterly dreamy. We’ll let this beautiful photo taken by a member of our team do the persuading.
8. Curl up with a Cornish book
Sometimes, on a winter’s day when the wind is howling and the rain is slicing horizontally through the sky soaking everything in its path, the last thing you want to do is leave the warmth of your home. Luckily, our county has produced some fantastic literary accolades. From charming, illustrated children’s books to tales inspired from great authors’ visits to Cornwall, curl up with a book and a hot chocolate and escape the cold. Need some recommendations? No problem! We’ve got you covered with our top Cornish books to get on your reading list.
