It’s the first month of a brand new year, and a fresh calendar of things to do in Cornwall in January. Make 2024 the year of trying new things and visiting unearthed corners of the county. January’s diary has plenty for you to sink your teeth into.

1st January: New Year’s Day Roast

Where: The Greenbank, Falmouth

On New Year’s Day, leave the cooking and the washing up to us. Head to the Water’s Edge restaurant or below decks to The Working Boat on 1st January between midday until late for a roast dinner with all the trimmings. Hearty food, delicious views, and great company. The perfect way to start 2024!

1st January: The Piskie in the Garden Storytelling

Where: The Minack Theatre, Porthcurno

Head to The Minack on New Year’s Day to listen to the charming story of The Piskie in The Garden. This is a tale of an old gardener who discovers a group of piskies have taken over his potting shed. The show features musical numbers, puppets, and wonderful narration, on one of Cornwall’s most breath-taking stages.

6th January: Bodmin Wassail

Where: Throughout Bodmin

The melodic sounds of old wassail songs will fill the streets of Bodmin this month. Traditionally held on 6th January each year, this musical pastime has been a part of Bodmin’s heritage since the early 1600s. Starting at the Bodmin Town Council, the small group of local men will be dressed in their finest top hats and tailcoats. They’ll be spreading joy through the medium of song.

10th January: Beginners Jewellery Course

Where: Inspire Makers, Falmouth

If you’re looking to take up a new hobby for 2024, head to Inspire Makers on Falmouth’s high street for a four week Beginners Jewellery Course. Each week will focus on new techniques for creating beautiful, wearable jewellery, including a pendant, a ring, a bangle, and a pair of earrings.

All materials and tools will be included, plus plenty of tea, coffee, and soft drinks – so just bring along yourself, your creative ideas, and an open mind to learning a new skill.

19th January: The Best of Hans Zimmer Illuminated

Where: Truro Cathedral

One of the most spectacular things to do in Cornwall in January, head to the jaw-dropping Truro cathedral for an unforgettable musical symphony. Pull up a pew and prepare to be moved by The London Film Music Orchestra’s performance of iconic musical moments in cinema. Enjoy a dazzling setlist of the very best from Hans Zimmer, including numbers from Harry Potter, Star Wars, Jaws, Sherlock Holmes, and more!

20th January: New Year Wellbeing Retreat

Where: Trebah Garden, Falmouth

Connect your mind and body at a truly cleansing retreat set in the subtropical gardens of Trebah. 22nd-27th January: The Woman in Black

Where: Hall For Cornwall, Truro

After over 30 years in London’s West End, the chilling production of thriller The Woman in Black is coming to The Hall For Cornwall for a week. Not one for the faint-hearted, the critically-acclaimed show is excitingly terrifying and horrifyingly brilliant!

25th January: Bobby’s Taste of Cornwall

Where: The Greenbank, Falmouth

Last but not least on our list of things to do in Cornwall in January is something delightful to tickle your tastebuds. Head to The Greenbank, for a dining experience with our Head Chef Bobby Southworth.

Bobby will be showcasing his culinary talents in a mouth-watering six-course feast. Each dish is inspired by the traditions found in Cornish cuisine, with an inventive Greenbank twist. The dinner starts at 7pm, overlooking uninterrupted views of Falmouth harbour. Get to know Bobby as he shares his top tips and cooking insights with every course served.
