Winter wanderings in and around Falmouth

Autumn is in full swing at the Greenbank, and as we walk through Falmouth town with copper and auburn leaves swirling around our feet we can’t help but think that winter is on its way.

We feel that Cornwall (and Falmouth in particular) is at its most beautiful in the closing months of the year, so we’ve compiled a selection of winter activities in and around Falmouth to feed adventure and romance in the twilight of 2014.

Sunrise, sunset

Speaking of twilight, the glow that splashes across our harbour town in the later months is simply beautiful. Whether you’re inside with a hot chocolate or enjoying some local fish and chips on the harbour, the short days mean there’s never long to wait after lunch before the sun starts to dip beneath the horizon.

Falmouth Oyster festival

The Falmouth Oyster Festival not only showcases the fertile waters that surround the county but also brings sea shanties, live music and even an oyster shucking competition to Events Square between 9th and 12th October.

A celebrity chef masterclass opens the event, and the unmistakable air of show business continues throughout the festival thanks to professional cooking demonstrations from local cuisiniers at the top of their game.

Amidst the winter festivals and fairs, some quality time indoors can be just what people need to appreciate what the county has to offer during the colder months.

The Greenbank’s open fire and views of the sea stroking the harbour, paired with warm crab cakes and steaming hot soup with fresh crusty bread is just the thing to offset any seasonal chills.

Truro Victorian Christmas Market

A short drive or train journey from Falmouth to Truro in the opening weeks of December will introduce you to the 10th incarnation of the city’s famous Victorian Christmas Market, complete with seventy exhibitors flaunting artisan food, drink and crafts in complete period costume; a perfect present from the past.

The fully heated marquee means that although Jack Frost may be starting to nip at your nose, warmth and good humour await you in Cornwall’s capital city.
