Where to photograph the perfect sunrise in Cornwall
Capturing a Cornish sunrise on camera is surprisingly easy – even with a smart phone.
It is the light and location, not necessarily the equipment, which makes a good sunrise photograph. Whether you have a smartphone or top of the range SLR camera, planning is the key to a successful shot. Here are our top tips on getting that sunrise photo…
- Find the sunrise times online by searching for the location of the area you wish to go.
- Get to your location early, making sure you have enough time to appreciate the golden hour. This is when the sun is close to the horizon, making the light magical.
- Always check the weather and don’t be put off by light clouds. This can add a beautiful touch to the sky. Morning mist and fog also work as the light starts to beam through.
- Scout your location. Here in Cornwall you can’t go wrong with an ocean view! However there are plenty of valleys, moors and woodlands that also create beautifully interesting shots.
- Rule of thirds. By placing your subject off-center, either a third or two-thirds into the image, can help your photograph look more dynamic.
- Add a foreground to create some interest. Trees, people, buildings or beach huts silhouetted against the colourful sky adds depth to your photos.
St Michael’s Mount

From ancient cobbles to castle walls, and the sun rising over the mount, this is a dreamy location to capture that golden hour. Catch the sunrise this month at around 5:50am.
Kennack Sands
Where: 40 minutes from the hotel
A best kept secret, Kennack Sands offers photographers that untouched beach shot, as not many tourists know about this secluded sandy spot near the Lizard. You can catch the sunrise here around 5:55am this month.
Coverack
Where: 40 minutes from us
This beautiful fishing cove down towards the Lizard offers an idyllic backdrop for those sunrise photographs. Offering rich tones of reds, oranges and golden yellows, this is definitely not one to miss. Sunrise will be happening at around 5:50am this month.
Mousehole
Where: 1 hour from The Greenbank
A stunning fishing village and port, Mousehole is home to many artists. Popular for retaining its original character, charm and beauty, it is situated two miles south of Penzance on the shore of Mount’s Bay. Make sure to be at Mousehole for 5:55am this August to not miss out.
Falmouth Harbour

Call us biased but our favourite sunrise is over Falmouth harbour. Whether you’re in one of our harbour view rooms or dining early at breakfast in the Water’s Edge, that perfect moment when Falmouth wakes up is easily captured from The Greenbank. Expect vibrant skies, glistening waters and silhouettes of boats, birds and Pendennis castle further afield.
