Where to photograph the perfect sunrise in Cornwall

Capturing a Cornish sunrise on camera is surprisingly easy – even with a smart phone.

It is the light and location, not necessarily the equipment, which makes a good sunrise photograph. Whether you have a smartphone or top of the range SLR camera, planning is the key to a successful shot. Here are our top tips on getting that sunrise photo…

  • Find the sunrise times online by searching for the location of the area you wish to go.
  • Get to your location early, making sure you have enough time to appreciate the golden hour. This is when the sun is close to the horizon, making the light magical.
  • Always check the weather and don’t be put off by light clouds. This can add a beautiful touch to the sky. Morning mist and fog also work as the light starts to beam through.
  • Scout your location. Here in Cornwall you can’t go wrong with an ocean view! However there are plenty of valleys, moors and woodlands that also create beautifully interesting shots.
  • Rule of thirds. By placing your subject off-center, either a third or two-thirds into the image, can help your photograph look more dynamic.
  • Add a foreground to create some interest. Trees, people, buildings or beach huts silhouetted against the colourful sky adds depth to your photos.
