What’s on in March 2019: Cornwall’s Diary
Time to wake up and smell the daffodils! This month offers us the first signs of spring and we’re welcoming March with open arms and wide smiles. Be it film screenings, science, spring celebrations, or theatre – March is getting ready for the change in weather and you should be too. Here’s our hand-picked guide to Cornwall this month…
2nd MARCH: WORLD PASTY CHAMPIONSHIPS, EDEN PROJECT, st austell
Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank
Celebrate the legendary Cornish pasty with the Eden Project at the Pasty Championships, where amateur and professional bakers from around the world battle it out to create the ultimate baked delicacy. Enjoy a great line-up of live music, comedy, workshops, other pasty-themed fun and a few beers in the biomes.
4th March – 11th May: RENÉ HALKETT – FROM BAUHAUS TO CORNWALL EXHIBITION, Falmouth Art Gallery
Where: right on our doorstep!
On the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Bauhaus, Falmouth Art Gallery showcase one of its students René Halkett, who studied under the renowned artists Klee and Kandinsky. Escaping the rise of fascism in the 1930s, Halkett sought exile in Britain and moved to Cornwall. He continued to create, basing his works on the Bauhaus principle of form following function.
7th March: THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS, Acorn Theatre, Penzance
Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank
The classic story by Kenneth Grahame is brought to life on the Acorn stage, as they re-create animals, battles lost and won, as well as a considerable amount of fun! A treat for all the family, offering a much-loved classic tale populated by all our old friends and directed by Andy Blake. “If you like your fun wild, furry and wet….you’ll love Wind in the willows!”
9th March: ST PIRAN’S DAY CELEBRATIONS, Wheal Martyn, St Austell
Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank
Celebrating all things Cornish, get stuck in with baking, making preserves, home brewing, photography, music and craft competitions, as well as visiting the various local gin and brewery stalls. Most importantly, your ticket will include a Crib Stack Tea.
14th – 24th March: FALMOUTH SPRING FESTIVAL, across Falmouth
Where: right on our doorstep!
An early season celebration of coast, community and culture awaits! Organised by the Falmouth BID, paint the town yellow as local schoolchildren hand out thousands of daffodils and decorations to passers-by and local shop owners. Take a dip in the rock-pooling sessions, attend science talks in the local pubs, see volunteers ‘spring-cleaning’ the town, and marvel at the Spring Flower Show. On the spring clean day, The Greenbank’s own troop of volunteers will be armed with bin bags and paint brushes to spruce up the areas around our gardens.
16th – 17th March: THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR FAMILY WEEKEND, Eden Project, St Austell
Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank
Expect an action-packed weekend of family fun activities that explore Eric Carle’s timeless storybook, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Follow the trail around Eden Project’s biomes and explore the life cycle of the butterfly before settling down for a magical story-telling session. There are also various craft activities to get involved with too, all inspired by the beautiful illustrations within the book.
17th March: THE LOBSTER FILM SCREENING, Old Bakery Studios, Truro
Where: 20 minute drive from The Greenbank
Join the very first Three Rivers Film Club, where they’ll be screening The Lobster, a surreal feature from ‘The Favourite’ director Yorgos Lanthimos, where in a dystopian society, single people must find a mate within 45 days or be transformed into an animal of their choice. Nevertheless, this film is thrilling and immersive.
20th March: SCIENCE IN THE PUB, The Working Boat, FALMOUTH

We’re welcoming back Science in the Pub on Wednesday 20th March as part of the 2019 Spring Festival. This year’s theme: How do animals see the world? This talk is FREE and for those that want to expand on their scientific knowledge. Or for those just needing an excuse to go to the pub on a school night!
22nd March: SCRATCHWORKS THEATRE: WOMANS, Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro
Where: 25 minute drive from The Greenbank
WOMANS is a feast for the eyes and ears, packed full of physical comedy and original music. Whilst telling the raucous tale of the first female resistance, audiences will help Leta in 46BC Ancient Rome, where she reclaims her place in the history books.
23rd March: U-STUDIO FESTIVAL, Tate St Ives
Where: 40 minute drive from The Greenbank
A culmination of the Saturday sessions workshops created throughout the year, drop in on the 23rd March and make some art at the experimental and creative open studios, which are run by young people from the Tate Collective team.
23rd March: GIN AND CORNISH DRINKS FESTIVAL, the alverton hotel, Truro
Where: 25 minute drive from The Greenbank
Join our sister hotel The Alverton on 23rd March for their very first Cornish Gin and Drinks Festival. Revel in plenty of drink samples and demonstrations, meet the makers behind some of Cornwall’s finest drinks brands and dance the night away to live music. Your ticket also includes a G&T on arrival, as well as your very own gin glass to take away.
31st March: MOTHER’S DAY ON THE WATER’S EDGE, the greenbank hotel, falmouth
