What’s On In July 2019: Cornwall’s Diary

From weekend festivals to agricultural shows, July is certainly the month to get outdoors in Cornwall. School’s almost out for summer which means the county will be bustling with tourists and locals all enjoying the sunshine. These are our diary dates for a joyous July in Cornwall…

1st – 31st july: MIRACLE THEATRE ‘A PERFECT WORLD’, throughout cornwall

Where: various locations throughout Cornwall including Penzance, Newquay, St Just, Redruth and Liskeard

Miracle Theatre are celebrating their 40th anniversary with a new show ‘A Perfect World’. Showing throughout July in specified venues in Cornwall, the show is described as a comic escapade for all ages. Choose from one of the Cornish venues to enjoy a lively theatre production this summer.

3rd – 6th july: PENZANCE LITERARY FESTIVAL, penzance

Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank

Book worms and lovers of literature gather around. The annual Penzance Literary Festival is returning, and this year’s theme is ‘borderlines’. The four day event will feature over 40 author talks, together with writing workshops, a publishing day and an evening celebrating Cornish music and culture. The festival always promotes local talent in Cornwall, alongside creatives of the national literary stage. Big names for the books include Man Booker Prize-winner Alan Hollinghurst, acclaimed crime writers John Harvey and Jane Corry and award-winning poet Kate Clanchy.

5th – 20th july: LAFROWDA FESTIVAL, st just, penwith

Where: 1 hour drive from The Greenbank

Two weeks of events and workshops, Lafrowda Festival is a big celebration of arts, fun and frivolity in St Just. This event is all about food and drink, music, street processions and family fun and the theme this year is ‘off the page’. Pop down for a day or stay the whole fortnight for a vibrant, family friendly Cornish festival you don’t want to miss.

6th July: JESS GLYNNE AT live in THE WYLDES, bude

Where: 1 hour 30 mins drive from The Greenbank

Don’t be so hard on yourself and grab a ticket to see Jess Glynne at Live In The Wyldes. She’ll be performing all of her hits at this picturesque music venue hidden in the rolling hills and wonderful woodland, just a short drive from the seaside town of Bude. It’s one of the most magical open-air, live music venues in Cornwall to visit this summer.

7th july: RACE FOR LIFE, truro

Where: 25 minute drive from The Greenbank

On the first Sunday in July, strap on your trainers and run, jog or walk 5k to help beat cancer! Truro’s Race For Life starts at Richard Lander School and follows Truro’s country lanes, roads and streets taking in fantastic views, before returning to the event area. The terrain is predominantly road with some pathways and grass sections. If you aren’t able to make the race, why not sponsor a friend or family member taking part? It’s a fantastic cause and a real community effort.

12th – 14th july: TROPICAL PRESSURE FESTIVAL, PORTHTOWAN

Where: 30 minute drive from The Greenbank

Party in a wacky wonderland at the family friendly Tropical Pressure Festival. Porthtowan will host a proud celebration of culture, with acts from Colombia, Brazil, Kenya, Cuba, Jamaica and the UK. Sample cuisines from different countries at the vegetarian food stalls. When the sun goes down, the festival livens up with quirky silent discos and a tropical dancefloor. Dress bold and bright for this knees-up.



12th july – 30th august: SUMMER GARDEN SESSIONS AT THE ALVERTON HOTEL, truro

Where: 30 minute drive from The Greenbank

The newest garden party happening in heart of Truro city, The Alverton Hotel are hosting Summer Garden Sessions from 12th July through to the end of August every Friday evening. Sip on two for £10 cocktails on the terrace overlooking the hotel’s private gardens. Delicious food will be served from the outdoor grill for al fresco diners. With an exciting line-up of local musicians, it’s the place to be for that Friday feeling this summer!



13th july: FALMOUTH GIN FESTIVAL, the greenbank hotel, falmouth

Where: at the hotel

Chin chin, it’s all about gin at this year’s Falmouth Gin Festival. We at The Greenbank will be hosting the event throughout the entire hotel, finishing in The Riverbank Suite overlooking Falmouth harbour, from midday until late. If you’ve got yourself a ticket, you can enjoy a G&T upon arrival, samples from all our distilleries, and of course a keepsake branded gin glass to hold all your favourite future tipples. Expect games, music and boozy masterclasses. Cheers to that!

15th july: STITHIANS SHOW, stithians show ground

Where: 15 minute drive from The Greenbank

Check out Cornwall’s biggest one day agricultural show at Stithians showground. This oh-so Cornish show is nearly 200 years old. Founded in 1834, it began as a challenge between the local parishioners over the standards and quality of produce and livestock, and today this competitive spirit remains at the heart of the show. A great family day out, admire animals large and small, from horses, cows and goats to owls, dogs, rabbits and bees. Have fun watching Cornish wrestling or showjumping, tap your toes along to live music or take part in a crafts class, from cooking to sewing or even gardening!

15TH JULY – 15TH SEPTEMBER: HERITAGE BOAT TOURS, THE NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM

Where: 20 minute walk from The Greenbank

Hop aboard one of the National Maritime Museum’s most prized Cornish boats, Jonik, for a tour of Falmouth with a difference. Take in the town’s famous landmarks on the 1930s motor cruiser and discover breath-taking views whilst learning about the maritime history in Cornwall from your expert tour guide. This unique boat trip is an intimate affair, with only eight passengers and two crew. Your group will be free to ask as many questions and enjoy quality time on the water together. A ticket also includes entry to the National Maritime Museum – a perfect July day out in Cornwall.

20th july: APOLLO 50, goonhilly earth station, helston

Where: 35 minute drive from The Greenbank

Have an out-of-this-world experience at Goonhilly. This July marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing – the first time mankind set foot on the moon. Goonhilly Earth Station played a crucial role in the landing back in 1969, and they are marking the momentous occasion with a very special event. The day of technology, workshops, music and talks, including headline performances by Public Service Broadcasting and Orbital, starts from 10am until 2am. Make a night of it, as free camping is included and located off site, serviced by a free shuttle bus service.



25th – 28th july: PORT ELIOT FESTIVAL, st germans

Where: 1 hour and 20 mins from The Greenbank

Hosted in the grand Port Eliot estate, this festival is described by Western Morning News as ‘a bohemian, arty wonder.’ Encapsulating all aspects of the creative world, Port Eliot Festival brings together live music, comedy, fashion, art and crafts, literature, drama and theatrics, cuisine, and outdoor adventures in one beautiful space. Notorious for its unruly after party scene where festival-goers let their hair down after a day of inspiring activities, this is certainly one to add to the diary for avid festival fans.

27th july: PORT NAVAS REGATTA, falmouth

Where: 20 minute drive from The Greenbank

A fun event for all the family. Expect games, delicious barbecued food, a bar and tea tent alongside many other attractions in pretty Port Navas. The regatta is for experienced and novice water lovers alike, with lots of fun races for all ages! Bring your boat and paddle board along or borrow one to get involved in the waterside activities. Make your way down to Port Navas Village Hall where the day of fun will commence!



30th july – 9th august: ST ENDELLION SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL, port isaac

Where: 1 hour and 15 mins from The Greenbank

This festival was born when a priest, Roger Gaunt, invited his friends to St Endellion to renovate the then derelict rectory. The group raised the funds with small scale concerts including an orchestra and choir. The festival is now internationally famous, and a must-see for classical music lovers. The vibe is intimate and inspiring, with opera, choral, orchestral, chamber and recital concerts taking place over the week and a half.
