What’s on in February 2020: Cornwall’s Diary

Make the last month of winter count, with lots of fun things to do during February in Cornwall. Peculiar puppetry, Valentine’s Day dining and scientific experiments at the National Maritime Museum are just some of the fun events going on in Cornwall this month.

27TH JANUARY – 14TH MARCH: THE FESTIVAL OF CURIOUS PUPPETRY, THE POLY, FALMOUTH

Where: 15 minute walk from The Greenbank

Discover whimsical characters with strings attached at The Poly in Falmouth. This curious puppetry exhibition is running all month until mid-March. Enjoy special performances from brilliant hand-crafted puppets and their talented creators.

8TH FEBRUARY: THE GREENBANK WINTER GIN FESTIVAL, FALMOUTH

Where: throughout the hotel

Have a fantipsy time at our Falmouth Winter Gin Festival this month! On Saturday 8th February the hotel will be welcoming lots of local tipples. Expect gin suppliers, craft spirit distillers and breweries from around the county. Sip on G&Ts, dance along to live music and feast on our festival menu bursting with bao buns, moreish bagels, refreshing salads and divine artisan doughnuts. Tickets are now on sale here.

9th and 16th february: SNOWDROP SUNDAYS, pencarrow house and gardens, bodmin

Where: 1 hour drive from The Greenbank

Head to Pencarrow House and Gardens on the second and third Sundays of February to witness a beautiful blanket of clean white petals blooming. Snowdrop Sundays are the perfect opportunity to admire the flowers in all their glory, as they mark the imminent arrival of spring. A suggested donation of £5 is recommended at this charity led floral event. All the proceeds go towards the two chosen charities, CLEAR and Parkinson’s Research.

10th february: ST IVES FEAST AND HURLING THE SILVER BALL, st ives

Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank

Celebrate this ancient St Ives tradition, when the coastal town marks the anniversary of the consecration of the Parish Church of St Eia in the 1400s. The festivities kick off with a civil procession led by the Mayor through the charming streets of the town. Then, a special blessing takes place at St la Well near Porthmeor Beach, followed by one of Cornwall’s oldest sports – the traditional hurling of the silver ball. Residents and visitors roll a giant silver ball around St Ives, another tradition that looks as bizarre as it sounds!

14th february: VALENTINE’S DAY AT THE WATER’S EDGE, the greenbank hotel, falmouth

Where: in our Water’s Edge restaurant

15th february: THE COUNTRYMEN CONCERT, the acorn, penzance

Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank

The Countrymen are on tour, and will be taking their audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall this month. Featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs, as well as some original material, enjoy the passionate performances from this Cornish band.

17th – 21st february: SCIENCE OF THE SEA SHOWS, the national maritime museum, falmouth

Where: 20 minute walk from The Greenbank

For family fun with a bang this half term, the National Maritime Museum has just the thing to keep everyone entertained. Featuring a live, expert-led science show to wow children and parents this month, expect magical fog, explosive water and curious chemistry demonstrated in exciting experiments. And let’s not forget the stunning views overlooking the marina in Falmouth.

23rd – 29th february: cornish pasty week 2020

Where: all throughout Cornwall

Take a bite out of a piping hot pasty during Cornish Pasty Week at the end of the month. Golden pastry and hearty fillings enjoyed alongside some proper Cornish scenery, what’s not to love? On the 23rd February, don’t miss out on a week of fun activities surrounding the pasty, ending with the ‘Oggy Oscars’, the ninth-annual World Pasty Championships hosted at the Eden Project. Battle it out in the kitchen and whip up some perfectly crimped pasties at one of the tastiest events this February in Cornwall.

27th february: TEA SCHOOL MASTERCLASSES, tregothnan estate

Where: 40 minute drive from The Greenbank

Get the kettle on and head to Tregothnan’s Tea School Masterclasses. Learn all about the history of tea, explore Tregothnan’s private tea plantations and sip away at tea tasting. This is the ideal treat for any brew enthusiast. You’ll most certainly be leaving a true tea connoisseur!

28th february: TRURO CATHEDRAL CHOIR SPRING CONCERT, truro

Where: 25 minute drive from The Greenbank

For a harmonious chorus of singers, head to Truro Cathedral at the end of the month. Featuring uplifting and joyous performances, the spring concert is not one to miss. In addition to great music, soak up the impressive gothic-revival architecture in the heart of the Cornish capital city.
