Despite lockdowns, tiered systems and curfews for many, Christmas is still coming to town this December in Cornwall. ‘Tis the season to get jolly with Santa, feel festive with light displays, and immerse yourself in brilliant theatre. Here’s our guide to your December in Cornwall…
1st – 31st december: FESTIVE LUNCHES AND AFTERNOON TEA, the greenbank, falmouth
Where: in our Water’s Edge restaurant
Here at The Greenbank, we have decked the halls and mulled the wine in preparation for Christmas time. Gather with your loved ones and share fabulous festive food and Christmas tipples at the Water’s Edge. Our festive lunches are £19 for two courses or £25 for three courses, or for something to sweeten up your day, try our festive afternoon tea. Three-tiers of yuletide delights await.
4th – 6th December: PORTHILLY SPIRIT’S CHRISTMAS AT THE FARM, Trefresa Farm, rock
Where: 1 hour drive from The Greenbank
After a year where community spirit has never felt more important, Porthilly Spirit is bringing friends, makers and producers together for the most quintessential three-day Christmas market. The farm will be transformed into a winter wonderland, showcasing a wealth of Cornish artisan food, drink and craft producers. Book ahead in advance for a wreath making course, as well various workshops throughout the weekend. Even more, tuck into delicious homemade food from Fee’s Food and a few tipples hosted by Porthilly Spirit Distillery.
4th – 30th December: FESTIVAL OF CHRISTMAS, The eden project, st austell
Where: 1 hour drive from The Greenbank
Experience the Eden Project like never before. As darkness falls, immerse yourself in the festive biomes, which are transformed into a magical world of lights. Take a spin on the ice-rink and warm up with a hot chocolate or festive treat, as live musicians create a beautiful backdrop of joyful music that’s sure to get you in the festive spirit. Look out for Father Christmas and his jolly elves, who will be putting on a fantastic performance. Fun for all the family!
4th December – 3rd January: HELIGAN’S ENCHANTING LANTERN EXPERIENCE, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, st austell
Where: 1 hour drive from The Greenbank
Explore Heligan by night with an enchanting and mesmerising lantern experience that will be sure to get you in the festive spirit. Working alongside the Lantern Company, The Lost Gardens of Heligan will illuminate their paths, courtyards and gardens with a beautiful array of wildlife lanterns. From frogs to foxes, badgers to squirrels and hedgehogs, all the family will be impressed with this year’s theme. Even better, The Heligan Shop will be open selling festive treats, local produce and seasonal gifts galore.
5th december – 3rd january: PETER RABBIT TRAIL, telissick gardens, feock
Where: 30 minute drive from The Greenbank
Peter Rabbit is in need of your help! With the colder winter months setting in, help Peter and his friends at Trelissick gardens find all the items to keep them warm. Enjoy finding Beatrix Potter’s well-loved characters such as Squirrel Nutkin, Mr Jeremy Fisher and Jemima Puddleduck, and solve the clues to earn a special trail badge and certificate.
12th – 30th december: WINTER WOOD, rouge theatre, tehidy woods
Where: 35 minute drive from The Greenbank
Returning to Tehidy Woods once again, multi-award-winning Rogue Theatre will be showcasing their enchanting winter celebration ‘Winter Wood’. Follow the path deeper into the woods and explore the land of myth, legend and festive magic – an adventure for families and those who still believe in magic.
19th – 22nd december: A CHRISTMAS CAROL, minack theatre, porthcurno
Where: 1 hour drive from The Greenbank
Joy to all mankind? Bah! This one man performance by David Mynne is one to see for yourselves. Spend an hour with Ebenezer Scrooge, who is haunted by four ghosts, each one more terrifying than the last. In true Charles Dickens style with added silliness, this simple yet impressive theatre performance will stay with you forever.
21st – 23rd december: THE MOUSEHOLE CAT Drive in, various locations around cornwall
Experience The Mousehole Cat with Cousin Jack’s drive-in screening this December. This theatre performance will be showcased on the big screen, with live music, “car-participation” and your very own Mowzer mini lantern to become a part of the adventure. These evenings are sure to warm your spirits and get you in the Christmas mood before the big day.
25th – 16th december: christmas swims in cornwall
Where: various beaches throughout Cornwall
There’s nothing like a refreshing dip in the ocean to remind you it’s December in Cornwall. On Christmas Day or Boxing Day, get ready to embrace the sea and share this special Cornish tradition with friends, family and your local community – socially distanced of course!
