What’s on in August: Cornwall’s Diary

Can you believe we’re in the height of summer already? There’s a whole host of things to do in Cornwall this August, so we’ve rounded up some of our favourites in Falmouth and further afield…

___

TUESDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS IN AUGUST: GRAND MEDIEVAL JOUSTS AT PENDENNIS CASTLE, FALMOUTH

Where: 40 minute walk or a 10 minute drive from The Greenbank Hotel
Head to this fine coastal fortress and feel the heat of the contest, as magnificent knights on horseback clash at the greatest event of medieval England. Cheer on your favourite in this thundering battle of bravery and honour. Soak up the medieval way of life in the colourful encampments and be entertained by the naughty court jester, while your budding young knights test their strength in the field.

5TH-14TH AUGUST: FALMOUTH WEEK

Where: right on our doorstep!
A firm favourite in our diary, Falmouth Week is the highlight of the town’s annual events calendar. For sailors and landlubbers alike, the festival will bring a full and varied programme of live music, markets, street food, fireworks, and the famous sailing regatta. The Greenbank is the perfect spot to watch The Red Arrows display on Wednesday 10th, and we’ll be hosting The Pink Wig’s pre-party drinks on Friday 5th (expect lots of pink cocktails, with £1 of every cocktail spent going towards the charity.)

___

6TH – 28TH AUGUST: KNEEHIGH THEATRE, THE LOST GARDENS OF HELIGAN

Where: 50 minute drive from Falmouth
This August, the wonderful folk at Kneehigh Theatre will perform two exciting new shows in the iconic Cornish garden: FUP, and The Two Gentlemen of Verona. The Asylum seasons are a chance for friends old and new to enjoy world class home-grown theatre, delicious food and drink, live music and a good old-fashioned Kneehigh knees-up.

19TH-21ST AUGUST: CORNISH STEAM AND COUNTRY FAIR, STITHIANS SHOWGROUND

Where: 15 minute drive from us
Almost one hundred full size and miniature steam engines from all over the country take part in this long established rally. Stunning showmen’s engines with their gleaming twisted brass, road rollers, ploughing engines, heavy haulage road locomotives and agricultural traction engines descend on the showground. As well as music, Morris men, trade stands, a craft marquee and vintage fun fair, in the main ring you can watch working horse demonstrations, hawking displays and the dog show.

28TH AUGUST: PARKLIVE, KIMBERLEY PARK, FALMOUTH

Where: 15 minute walk or 4 minute drive from The Greenbank
The perfect recipe to a lazy Sunday afternoon. Pack your picnic and stroll to ParkLive – a free day of acoustic live music showcasing the range of local creative talent. Families are welcome and will be well occupied in the storytelling tent, art workshop spots, and circus skills area.

29TH AUGUST: NEWLYN FISH FESTIVAL, NEAR PENZANCE

Where: 50 minute drive from us
Bank holiday plans? Celebrate all things fishy at Newlyn’s famous festival! Satisfy your appetite with the freshest Cornish seafood, watch a rolling programme of cookery demos by top local chefs, and help to raise money for the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen. With three music stages, arts, crafts, boats, and a bucket load of children’s activities – it’s the ultimate day trip out.
