What’s On in August 2020: Cornwall’s Diary

The last few months have been unlike any other we’ve experienced in Cornwall. After being on pause since March, it feels like the county is finally waking up from the slumber. We’re delighted to be back writing our diary of things to do in Cornwall. Read on for the lowdown on the month ahead.

27th july – 31st august: monsters of the deep, NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM, falmouth

Where: 20 minute walk from The Greenbank

During lockdown, The National Maritime Museum’s newest visitors were hibernating, awaiting the reopening. Now the museum is ready to show off their immersive exhibition – Monsters of the Deep.

Delve deep into the murky secrets of the ocean and discover creatures that dwell in the dark depths. Discover scientific facts behind these legendary and mythical beings, listen to tales, folklore and conspiracy theories, ponder fact from fiction and enjoy eye-opening displays for all the family.

1st august – 26th september: FAST BOAT TOURS, AUGUST ROCK ADVENTURES, helford passage

Where: 20 minute drive from The Greenbank

Adrenaline junkies alert, this one’s for you! Take to the estuaries of The Helford River for a heart-racing experience on the water. August Rock Adventures offer fast boat tours on their speedy RIB with high speed blasts around Falmouth Bay. Embrace the sea salt spray and take in incredible views of The Helford as you zoom across the river.

If you’re after something slightly slower paced, the boating experts will take you on a leisurely tour of Port Navas, Frenchman’s Creek and other hidden beauty spots around The Helford.

1st – 31st august: THE PAULOS CIRCUS DRIVE-IN SHOW, newquay

Where: 45 minute drive from The Greenbank

If you’re looking for things to do in August in Cornwall, how about a drive-in circus? Travel back in time to the 80s, when drive-ins were all the rage, and revel in the magic of the circus from the safety of your own car. Magic awaits at the county’s first drive-in circus show in Newquay!

1st – 31st august: EAT OUT TO HELP OUT

Where: various restaurants and cafes across the UK

Our Water’s Edge restaurant and The Working Boat will both be taking part in Eat Out to Help Out. The government scheme to help businesses in the hospitality industry, enjoy 50% off your food every Monday – Wednesday in August. With a maximum discount of £10 per person, it’s the perfect way to support businesses and eat out for less! The Water’s Edge will be offering Eat Out to Help Out for afternoon teas and lunches. 1st AUGUST – 12TH SEPTEMBER: PIERS, PORTS AND QUAYS EXHIBITION, FALMOUTH ART GALLERY

Where: 10 minute walk from The Greenbank

Falmouth Art Gallery’s latest exhibition is all about Cornwall’s sea-faring culture. Admire beautifully painted boats, serene coastal landscapes and thought-provoking portraits. Focusing mainly on scenes in Falmouth, escape the stress of everyday life and immerse yourself in some gorgeous artwork.

3rd – 31st august: STORYTELLING – THE SEA SHOW BY SQUASHBOX THEATRE, the minnack theatre

Where: 1 hour 10 minute drive from The Greenbank

Squashbox Theatre are bringing their family-friendly storytelling series to the breathtaking Minnack Theatre. And the theme couldn’t be more fitting, given the open-air theatre’s location. The stage is carved into the rugged coastline overlooking Porthcurno Beach. A cast of whimsical puppet characters are ready to perform sing-a-long tunes in the sunshine. A Squashbox performance is guaranteed to get the whole family involved!

4TH, 5TH, 6TH, 25TH, 26TH & 27TH AUGUST: DRIVE-IN CULT CINEMA, HENDRA CROFT FARM, NEWQUAY

Where: 35 minute drive from The Greenbank

Hendra Croft Farm in Newquay are hosting the ultimate cult film events with a twist. The drive-in cult cinema has everything you could want for a great evening of food, music and film.

Expect live music upon arrival, lots of festival favourites served by Cornish street food vendors and screenings of cult classics including Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski and Mad Max Fury Road. With some film choices yet to be confirmed, you can even nominate your favourite to be shown. Get your popcorn at the ready!

6TH, 13TH, 20TH & 27TH: PERRANPORTH CRAFT AND VEGAN MARKET, PERRANPORTH MEMORIAL HALL

Where: 30 minute drive from The Greenbank

The weekly vegan and craft market at Perranporth is back! Every Thursday from 9:30am – 4:30pm, browse handcrafted products from local residents and businesses, from mosaics, jewellery, shoes and purses to vegan dog treats, skincare and jams. With plenty of COVID-19 procedures in place, including arrows on the floor and hand sanitisers, social distancing will be simple to follow at the summer stalls.

14th and 28th august: SUMMER GARDEN SESSIONS, the alverton hotel, truro

Where: 30 minute drive from The Alverton

A cocktail garden party awaits at The Alverton Hotel in Truro. Our sister hotel will be welcoming talented musicians to take to the terrace with live performances. Clock off on a Friday and head to the historic hotel for al fresco dining and two for £10 cocktails. This year the event is ticketed to monitor the amount of people and ensure social distancing rules are adhered to. Tickets cost £15 and include a delicious summer cocktail on arrival! 29th august – 6th september: open studios cornwall 2020

Where: various locations around Cornwall

Art enthusiasts looking for things to do in August in Cornwall will be pleased to read this next diary date. Talented creatives are inviting you to guided tours to discover new artistic practices, masterpieces and techniques. Painters, printmakers, potters, textile designers, sculptors and illustrators are just some of the creatives involved in this year’s slightly different Open Studios event.

Discover new favourites, discuss works of art in depth and purchase those one-off pieces perfect for your home.
