What’s On in August 2019: Cornwall’s Diary
With the school holidays in full swing, August is a peak time for visitors in Cornwall. With this in mind, the county has lots of fantastic events going on throughout this summer month. Family-friendly events include archery taster sessions, Falmouth Week, and agricultural shows. Or if you’re looking for summer parties, there’s plenty in August to keep you dancing the night away.
August in Cornwall is set to be a busy one, so get organised with our diary dates for the month ahead…
1ST AUGUST – 3RD SEPTEMBER: SUMMER OF ARCHERY, NATIONAL TRUST TRERICE, NEWQUAY
Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank
Fancy trying a new skill or polishing up on your archery this summer? Head to National Trust Trerice in Newquay and master the art of the bow and arrow with archery sessions. This free event is included with standard admission. Take a tour of the beautiful grounds and pick up a new sport. Who knows, you might become the next top marksman or markswoman!
1st – 29th august: SING ALONG THE RIVER, lostwithiel parade gardens, lostwithiel
Where: 1 hour 5 minutes drive from The Greenbank
Every Thursday night in Lostwithiel, the Parade Gardens come to life with music and singing. Cornish choirs, brass and folk groups come together to perform alongside the River Fowey in the parish town of Lostwithiel. With a bar serving alcohol, a cake stall and lots of local food, bring along a blanket and your friends. This free event will keep you bopping along to live music all evening.
2ND, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th August: SUMMER GARDEN SESSIONS, the alverton hotel, truro
Where: 25 minute drive from The Greenbank
The Alverton Hotel are continuing their Summer Garden Sessions every Friday throughout August. Pull up a chair on the sunny terrace, sip on two for £10 cocktails and try delicious dishes served hot from the outdoor grill. Live performers set to play include Mog Jones, Winter Mountain, Simon and Lauren Willis, Will Keating and Miranda Brook. With stunning views of the hotel’s private gardens, it’s the place to be on a Friday night in Truro.
4th, 23rd and 26th August: FAL RIVER SUMMER CRUISES, falmouth
Where: 10 minute walk from The Greenbank
Admire Falmouth from a different perspective by booking onto a Fal River Summer Cruise this month. Enjoy cocktails and sunsets on the Sundowners Cruise, with your favourite summer tipples brought to you by our very own expert mixologists at The Greenbank Hotel. 5th – 26th august: RISE AND SHINE YOGA AND BRUNCH SESSIONS, tate museum, st ives
Where: 1 hour drive from The Greenbank
Treat yourself to an invigorating workout followed by a scrumptious breakfast, with rise and shine yoga and brunch sessions at the Tate. The museum in the heart of seaside town, St Ives, is offering morning yoga sessions, followed by deliciously healthy brunch options on their cafe terrace overlooking Porthmeor Beach. Suitable for all abilities, tickets are just £15 and include brunch, yoga and entry to the gallery.
7th – 11th august: BOARDMASTERS, newquay
Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank
Boardmasters is back again! The festival is a five-day celebration of music, surf and beach lifestyle, all set against the stunning backdrop of Newquay’s coastline. Bring your surfboard and catch a wave, then head to the tents for an epic party. Big name acts include Florence + The Machine, Dizzee Rascal, Wu-Tang Clan, Plan B, Jorja Smith, Lewis Capaldi and many more.
9th – 18th august: FALMOUTH WEEK, falmouth
Where: right on our doorstep!
We’re very excited that our favourite week of the year is back. Falmouth Week embraces the sailing and maritime heritage of our much-loved hometown, with 10 days jam-packed full of various events and celebrations. The town is abuzz with excitement and fun, from boat racing, the famous Falmouth Week air show and the town’s carnival, to energetic party nights like the annual 80s vs 90s bash, pink wig ladies’ night and the fabulous fireworks display.
This year, we’ll be hosting our own schedule of Falmouth Week events at The Working Boat. Check out what’s going on in the harbour view pub and don’t miss out on any of the action. We’ll see you there!
18th august: GIN & TEA BY THE SEA, the greenbank hotel, falmouth
Where: on our private quay
To conclude the Falmouth Week celebrations, we’ll be ending the week in style with our merry party, ‘Gin & Tea by the Sea’. Hosted in our marquee set up on our private quay, the gin will be flowing and the tunes will be playing against the backdrop of the bustling harbour. There are limited tickets available for this gin-tastic event, so make sure you avoid disappointment and book today!
11th august: TREGONY HEAVY HORSE SHOW AND COUNTRY FAYRE, tregony playing fields, truro
Where: 45 minute drive from The Greenbank
Neigh we have your attention please? Tregony’s annual Heavy Horse Show and Country Fayre is a family-friendly event for animal lovers. As well as the spectacular display of heavy horses and Shetland ponies, expect dog shows, birds of prey and sheep shearing. Throughout the day, food and refreshments, a beer tent, trade and craft stands, vintage cars and live music will all be going on. Ride a pony, watch a Punch and Judy show, or have a go on the fairground rides at this fun day out.
24th august: THE SECRET GIN GARDEN, scorrier house, redruth
Where: 30 minute drive from The Greenbank
Nestled in the corner of the 240-year-old walled gardens of Scorrier House in Redruth, this intimate one-night soirée is the ultimate, decadent get together. Immerse yourself in a secluded world of enchanted performances, including live music, burlesque, DJs and fire dancing, brought to you by the creators of The Great Estate Festival.
24th august: CORNWALL PRIDE, newquay
Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank
Cornwall Pride is returning to Newquay for the 12th year running. This internationally recognised event celebrates LGBT and wider communities, spreading the positive message of embracing all love and equality. During Cornwall Pride, Newquay will host a variety of events, including the Pride Parade, Rainbow Fest and the vibrant Moonbow Party that continues into the early hours.
30th august – 1st september: CORNWALL MOTORFEST 2019, crantock, newquay
Where: 45 minute drive from The Greenbank
Cornwall Motorfest is the county’s biggest motoring event, and returns for three days at the end of August. Perfect for all petrol-heads, enjoy live music across two stages including top tribute acts and DJs, stunt shows, food and refreshments, classic cars, the Saturday soapbox race and so much more.
