Reasons to visit Cornwall this winter

Why head to Cornwall in winter? There’s no doubt about Cornwall being one of the best places to go for a British summer holiday. Yet it is often forgotten during the crisp cooler months. Although colder in temperature, our beautiful county can be enjoyed just as much during the winter.

Here’s just a few reasons why visiting Cornwall in winter is worth it…

The Cornish coastline

Crowded beaches are a thing of the past when winter hits our Cornish coastlines. Blissfully quiet, enjoy the entire beach to yourselves, with the odd winter walker, surfer or bouncing dog passing by. With over 300 beaches in Cornwall to explore, breathe in the sea air and step foot on untouched sand. Even better, dogs are allowed on our Cornish beaches from 31st October – 1st March. So canine lovers have even more of an excuse to get out and stretch those legs!

Christmas markets

With organic and local produce everywhere you look, the Cornish Christmas markets are a must visit. Hand-crafted gifts that make for great stocking fillers and novelty trinkets to get those in the Christmas spirit, there is something for everyone in Cornwall this winter. Indulge on the diverse range of street food and sip on warming mulled cider as you see quiet villages transform into winter wonderlands.

cold water surfing

Feeling brave? Grab your wetsuit and dive head first into the refreshing ocean. Winter is the perfect time for watersports as the waves are bigger, better and usually less crowded, giving more opportunities for practising on the gnarly waves. We recommend a 4/3mm+ wetsuit, boots and gloves to keep you warm. Check out our favourite winter surfing spots here.

Chasing storms

Stormy waves are the norm for Cornwall in winter. Watch as Mother Nature goes wild, sending colossal waves crashing into weathered cliffs. To see the power of the storms, take a walk alongside the coastal path – or if you’d prefer, why not get cosy in The Working Boat pub with brew in hand, watching in the warmth?

Cosy cornish pubs

Talking of our pub, we honestly can’t think of a cosier spot to curl up in during the chillier months. Winter in Cornwall was made for tucking into a hearty dish, slurping a hot toddy and getting toasty in the company of friends and family.

Winter walks

Wrapped up against the cold, a refreshing walk can wipe away the cobwebs and feel like an achievement. With miles of coastal paths, frosty moors and picture perfect villages, there’s a variety of places to head to get that winter walk fix.

WARMING TIPPLES

And after all that walking, you’ll find an excuse around every corner to complete your ramble with a hot chocolate or two. Call us biased but we think the ones served in our Water’s Edge bar take some beating. Another favourite is Poldhu Beach Cafe for their famous boozy hot chocolates.
