Our top ‘off the beaten path’ spots in Cornwall to explore
Whether you’re a keen explorer in search of a new adventure, or looking to avoid some of the more popular attractions this summer, we’ve put together our favourite ‘off the beaten path’ spots to visit across Cornwall…
Durgan Beach, Mawnan Smith
Where: 20 minute drive from The Greenbank
Because of its secluded nature, Durgan beach tends to remain fairly quiet in the summer months. But that doesn’t make it any less alluring. Situated at the foot the sub-tropical Glendurgan Garden, you can reach the beach by heading down a winding coastal path, which boasts stunning views of the Helford river.
Upon arriving at the beach, you’ll come across an assortment of quaint cottages and a sandy beach that contains plenty of rockpools. Perfect for little ones to explore!
: National Trust
Nanjizal, Penzance
Where: 1 hour 25 drive from The Greenbank
Nanjizal is the ultimate spot in Cornwall for keen explorers. This location is well known for its dramatic views and isn’t short on caves and rocks to explore. Due to its difficult to reach location, this stretch of the south coast remains fairly untouched. So those who do make the trip have the pleasure of basking in the cove’s natural beauty.
This is definitely an ‘off the beaten path’ spot for advanced explorers only though, as access to the beach requires a rather tricky coastal path walk and descent.
: Salty Songs
Lantic Bay, Fowey
Where: 1 hour 25 drive from The Greenbank
With crystal clear waters and golden sand, you could mistake Lantic Bay for being in the Caribbean, not Cornwall. This stunning beach, located between Fowey and Polperro, is a treasure to be discovered.
While the walk down is a bit tricky, don’t let it phase you. As when you arrive to this hidden spot, you’ll be greeted by jaw-dropping, sweeping views of the Atlantic.
: The Times
Polly Joke, Newquay
Where: 50 minute drive from The Greenbank
This cove is a real north coast gem! Although its real name is Porth Joke, this stretch of beach is known by locals as ‘Polly Joke’, with its nickname deriving from the Cornish word Pol-Lejouack, meaning Jackdaw cove.
Due to its hidden nature and long stretching beach, even in the height of summer you’re guaranteed to find a secluded spot to set up camp for the day. And with turquoise waters, sandy white beaches and alluring rock pools, you won’t be in a rush to leave.
: The Cornwall Guide
Rinsey Cove, Near Porthleven
Where: 35 minute drive from The Greenbank
With dramatic cliff faces, and even a traditional engine house overlooking the cove, Rinsey Cove is the perfect spot to get a real taste of rustic Cornwall. Because of its closeness to some of the more popular coastal spots on the south coast, the stretch of beach here rarely gets busy. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t well worth a visit. Explore the surrounding coastal path or make your way down to the sand, for a real adventurers’ day out.
Pentire Steps, St Eval
Where: 1 hour drive from The Greenbank
A little further along the coast than its more popular neighbour Bedurthan Steps, Pentire Steps is a spot which boasts incredible views of the Atlantic.
Experienced surfers are known to take their boards down the steep path to catch the cove’s big waves, but its strong current means that it’s not a safe spot for swimmers.
This cove makes for an ideal pit stop during a day of hiking rather than a day trip, as the beach disappears at high tide.

Frenchman’s Creek, Helford
Where: 40 minutes drive from The Greenbank
Our favourite part of the Helford River, Frenchman’s Creek, has a famous reputation thanks to its connection with acclaimed author Daphne Du Maurier. The well-known writer loved this stretch of the river so much, so she even named a novel after it.
This Cornish spot is best explored by kayak or boat, to really appreciate the tranquil views across the river. But if you happen to be visiting by foot, there’s plenty of woodland walks to enjoy on the banks.
