Meet General Manager Matt Garland
Now General Manager at not only The Greenbank, but sister hotel The Falmouth too, Matt Garland’s story is one of dedication, passion and nearly two decades of hospitality experience rooted right here in Falmouth.
Matt first joined The Greenbank in 2006 as a part-time waiter at just seventeen years old. Previously, he’d worked in hospitality from the age of fifteen at Penmorva Manor in Budock. Originally balancing shifts at the hotel alongside an art degree at college, it didn’t take long for Matt to realise that hospitality – not art – was where his future lay.
Leaving college behind, Matt committed to a full-time career at The Greenbank. Steadily, he worked his way through the ranks over the years. From waiter to Training Junior Manager, Duty Manager, Restaurant Manager, Food Service Manager, Food and Beverage Manager, Assistant Hotel Manager and Hotel Manager, Matt’s journey is a true reflection of long-standing dedication to both the hotel and the hospitality industry.
Now, nearly twenty years after first walking through The Greenbank’s doors, Matt has taken on the significant role of General Manager not only at The Greenbank, but also at sister hotel, The Falmouth. Leading two of Falmouth’s most iconic waterfront hotels is no small undertaking. Matt’s promotion reflects both his extensive operational experience and his deep understanding of hospitality in the town he calls home.
Leading a large team across both properties, Matt remains heavily involved in day-to-day operations. Supporting department managers while ensuring guests continue to receive the warm, genuine hospitality both hotels are known for escpecially.
“The Greenbank really does feel like my second family,” says Matt. “Having started here nearly 20 years ago, I’m incredibly proud to now be General Manager and to lead such fantastic teams in the place I grew up. I know many of our guests personally, and being able to offer memorable experiences on our beautiful harbourside, and now the seafront too, is genuinely rewarding.”
Matt’s connection to Falmouth runs far beyond the workplace. Growing up around the town’s beaches and coastline, he has always had a strong affinity with the sea and the outdoors.
What watersports do you love and recommend?
“I absolutely love surfing. The buzz you get when you catch a wave is second to none. I would also recommend sailing, as it’s such a spectacular sport.”
What makes Falmouth so special to you?
“I was born in the area and spent most of my life on the beaches here, especially as a kid. My family are very close, which is important to me, and I also met my wife in Falmouth. It’s special for all kinds of reasons.”
What Cornish delicacy is your favourite?
“There’s just so many! My top would have to be hog’s pudding, a large Choak’s or Ann’s pasty, Healeys Cyder, or seafood – lots and lots of seafood. It really is the best in Cornwall.”
Can you sum up Cornwall in five words?
“There’s no place like home.”
Having spent almost two decades helping shape guest experiences at The Greenbank, Matt continues to play an integral role in both hotels’ futures, leading with genuine care for the teams, guests and community at the heart of The Cornwall Hotel Collection.
