INTERESTING CORNISH PEOPLE: MEET JACK MATTHEWS

Meet Jack, a photographer from Cornwall, as we talk about photographing our breath-taking landscapes, new projects and all things Cornish…

Where’s your favourite place to photograph?

A bit of an unexpected answer but I’m doing a portrait project at Watershed in Falmouth called PARSEL, which is Cornish for ‘set of people’ so probably there! If I’m outside though, Porthtowan when its waves are pumping.

What’s makes Cornwall so special?

I think it’s the pace of life. We’re a bit more chilled down here. There’s no real rush – everything will get done dreckly. The landscape of Cornwall is also very special. It’s just so diverse and interesting, and you can always find a new place to explore.

What do you love most about Falmouth?

The diversity of people – there’s always someone new to meet with a story to tell.

What’s your favourite photo you’ve taken?

That’s a tricky question, as I have loads of favourites. But I think there’s a picture I took for a project called MORDON (Cornish for ‘sea wave’) which took me seven hours to achieve and I was so happy with the resulting image. I’m not going to tell you where it is because that is a secret but feel free to guess!

What would be on your must-do list whilst in Cornwall?

Go for a rainy coastal walk. It may look grim but the Cornish coastline is stunning in stormy weather. Some of my favourite photographs have come from the mizzly days as it’s deadly quiet. Also it makes the pint at the end taste that much better.

Favourite Cornish delicacy?

Being Cornish my Gran may disown me if I don’t say a Cornish pasty. I think a Cornishman who walks by a bakery and doesn’t go in to buy a pasty deserves a medal.

Favourite ‘Hidden’ spot?

Can’t tell you. I’ve not actually photographed the surfing there yet (it’s on my to shoot list) but I will tell you it is in Cornwall…!

Top beach?

Widemouth Bay. I grew up in North Cornwall and this is the beach we always end up going to with the family.

When you’re not at work, where would we find you?

Probably at Gwithian beach. It’s my favourite beach down this way. I love surfing there and it’s where I go and take part in Wave Project most weekends (an amazing charity – check them out!)

When’s the best time of day for you to photograph?

Anytime. I think whatever the conditions there’s never not an excuse to shoot, but that being said I love shooting in autumnal light. It has something quite special to it.

Can you sum up Cornwall in three words?

Beautiful, Chilled, and proper ‘Ansum

Thanks Jack! Check out his work over on his Instagram for daily updates…
