Interesting Cornish People: Meet David Perry

Meet David Perry, a photographer from Cornwall, as we talk about capturing our breath-taking landscapes, his favourite hidden locations and all things Cornish…

Where’s your favourite place to photograph?

I am relatively new to topside photography, but Maenporth beach near Falmouth is a place I keep going back to watch the sunrise over the horizon. Every sunrise is different and so mesmerising to see.

What’s makes Cornwall so special?

I love the sea and everything to do with it – swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and paddle boarding to name a few. I have lived most of my life in Gloucestershire but for the past seven years I have lived here in Cornwall. Watching the power of the sea in the storms is mind blowing and I could never go back.

What do you love most about Falmouth?

Living on the doorstep of Falmouth, it has many things I love. Lots of shops in the town, the vibrant atmosphere of the restaurant and pubs, live music and festivals with the amazing views all around from Penryn River to Falmouth Bay.

What’s your favourite photo you’ve taken?

My favourite photo to date was taken at Maenporth Beach just last year. We had some diving friends staying over for the weekend and we could not resist seeing the sunrise view come up over the horizon. Once in the water, the three of them decided to go skinny dipping just as the sun emerged over the horizon. It was a very surreal thing to see – something I think everyone should put on their must-do-list for themselves.

What would be on your must-do list whilst in Cornwall?

I am really starting to get into wildlife photography. I have it on my list this year to visit several of the birds of prey wildlife centre’s around Cornwall. However, I have already crossed off skydiving over Perranporth, skinny dipping, clay pigeon shooting, boat fishing day trips and beach parties.

Favourite Cornish delicacy?

Can the answer be anything else than a proper pasty? But I’m not too keen to try the stargazy pie as of yet!

‘Hidden’ spot?

If I fancy going for a quiet walk in the woods (maybe even take the dog), then the old gunpowder factory ruins in Kennall Vale between Redruth and Falmouth is the place I go. Nature is slowly growing over the ruins which lie under the forest but makes for some gorgeous black and white images or slow exposure photos of the River Kennall that flows through it.

Top beach?

There are lots of amazing beaches in Cornwall so it is hard to name just one as they all have amazing qualities. So for me it would be Maenporth Beach. It is just off the beaten track, a lovely nature reserve behind it and you can park practically on the beach itself (which is very handy to sit in the car and watch the sunrise in the winter months).

When you’re not at work, where would we find you?

My main hobby is scuba diving, especially around the east coast of Cornwall. Just past Pendennis point is “Silver Steps” which is a lovely place to dive looking out for the remains of the old submarine wrecks and seeing the marine life in its own habitat. But I am always on storm watch alert.

When’s the best time of day for you to photograph?

I love watching sunrises, so early mornings is best for me – watching the world wake up.

Can you sum up Cornwall in three words?

Love it all!

Thanks David! Check out his work over on his Instagram for daily updates…
