Escape To The Sauna In Falmouth

With a brand-new year just starting to unfurl, we turned to Jem from Escape to the Sauna for a little advice on wellness and getting back to your best you in Falmouth.

What first inspired you to create Escape to the Sauna?

I’ve always been a water baby. Being in or beside the sea feels like home for me. That pull towards the water shaped everything. I started in 2022 with cold-water swimming sessions, often through social prescribing, thinking that was the heart of it. But it quickly became clear that if I wanted more people to feel the benefits of the water, I needed heat. Sauna was the obvious choice and at the time there weren’t many around, so it felt like we were breaking new ground. Once the wood-fired sauna arrived, the whole thing came alive. The heat became the centre of it and soon took over; and why not? It makes people feel incredible.

How would you describe the feeling of stepping into a wood-fired sauna?

It’s divine. The first wave of warmth feels like a deep, comforting hug, and the view outside of the harbour never disappoints. We run a proper, traditional sauna, usually between 80 and 100°C, so you feel real heat as you step in. That journey through the session is part of the magic. At first it’s deliciously warm, then the sweat comes, then a moment of challenge – but what you feel on the other side of that is extraordinary. Afterwards, people describe feeling relaxed, energised and clear-headed. The Japanese use the word totonou, roughly meaning “sauna trance”, which captures it perfectly. For me it’s a full reset. I can feel myself letting go the longer I sit there, wrapped in heat, with the water just beyond the glass.

What are some of the key wellness benefits people can experience from sauna sessions?

There’s a huge amount of science now, but the headlines are simple: improved cardiovascular health, reduced inflammation, better sleep and a noticeable drop in stress. Heat encourages circulation, eases muscle tension, and gives the nervous system a rare chance to step out of ‘fight or flight’. When you combine heat with cold through contrast therapy, the benefits multiply. Mood lifts, resilience builds and people often leave with that unmistakable glow and feel calm, clear and energised.

Cold dips are becoming increasingly popular – why do you think contrast therapy is so powerful?

I think people are looking for calm. A way to escape the constant stimulation of phones, tasks and the noise they create. Once the phone is away, you’re simply there: heat, breath, water, nature. There’s also a very real sense of achievement. Moving between the heat and the cold asks something of you. When you come out the other side, there’s a rush of clarity, energy and pride. You feel like you’ve done something genuinely good for yourself, something honest and elemental. And then there’s the community. Sharing those moments of heat and cold forms friendships quickly. People look out for one another, celebrate each other’s little wins and encourage one another through the challenge. That sense of belonging is just as powerful as the therapy itself.

For someone trying the sauna for the first time, what simple tips would you give to help them relax and enjoy it?

Prepare well: come hydrated and bring water, and consider electrolytes because you’ll sweat more than you expect. Avoid eating just before the session. Sauna is best done in rounds of around 10–15 minutes in the heat, then step outside to rest and, if you want, take a short cold dip, even a few seconds counts. Repeat the cycle. Most people find the first round the hardest; sometimes the second too. But somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes, the switch happens. Your body moves from ‘fight or flight’ to ‘rest and relax’, and that’s where the real magic is. You step outside in that peaceful, glowing “totonou” state.

January is often a month for reflection and reset – how can regular sauna time support a calmer, more balanced start to the year?

Sauna gives you space – a very real, quiet, warming space to slow down and reset. It also supports the body as you restart or build new training habits, helping with recovery and easing winter tension. When you come regularly, the benefits stack up: clearer thinking, deeper sleep, steadier mood and a more grounded sense of balance. And the community piece really helps people glide through a couple of months that can otherwise feel flat.

Tell me about your own wellness routine, and what you do to keep away the January blues.

I really notice the darker months, so I try to keep my routine simple and consistent. Movement is a big part of it – I swim, I lift, and I spend as much time as I can near the water. Over Christmas things slow down into family time, dog walks and the odd sea dip, but once January arrives I rebuild my rhythm: more pool time, more strength work and definitely sauna sessions four times a week. The mix of heat, cold, movement and family time is what keeps me balanced. It gives me energy, keeps my mind clear and helps me stay grounded through a month that can otherwise feel a bit flat. That’s what keeps the January blues away for me.

What has it been like bringing your sauna to The Greenbank’s harbourfront, and what makes this location special?

This is one of the most special places I know. The Greenbank has its own calm, welcoming energy, and the harbourfront adds something magical to the sauna experience. The view is beautiful in every direction, but the light in the moments just before and during sunrise can be breathtaking. The water is the standout feature for me with the reflections, the movement, the stillness of certain mornings. Being able to step straight into the harbour from the sauna is incredible. When the tide rises high enough for a safe harbour-wall jump, it adds a genuine moment of joy to the whole experience.

Having the hotel and pub right next to us just completes the experience – the perfect place to settle in after your sauna for something to eat or a well-earned drink.

Take a little extra time for yourself…

You can share the warmth in communal sessions for up to seven guests, or reserve the space just for you, with private hire for up to ten people. However you choose to unwind, the views across Falmouth harbour make every session unforgettable.
