Chefs on the Quay: a gourmet feast on 14th August
Chefs on the quay
On Wednesday 14th August, visit our events marquee on The Greenbank’s private quay for the inaugural Cornish food event, Chefs on the Quay. Six talented local chefs will be rustling up six tasting courses against the stunning backdrop of Falmouth’s harbour. Our sponsors, Sharp’s Brewery, will then be matching the delicious dishes with their award-winning beers and ales.
Alongside the divine food whipped up by Falmouth’s top chefs and great local tipples, let us entertain you with live music from Mog Jones. Listen to acoustic covers from the likes of Stevie Nicks, Bjork and David Bowie before taking a seat to indulge in the rustic feast.
So what’s on the menu?
The line-up for Chefs on the Quay is as follows:
Amuse bouche: Arty Williams | The Cove, Maenporth Beach
Starter: Simon George | The Alverton Hotel
Fish: Hylton Espey | Merchants Manor
Main: Bobby Southworth | The Greenbank Hotel
Dessert: Tom Hannon | The Rising Sun
Surprise course: Nick Hodges | Cornwall Hotel Collection
MEET The chefs
We are so lucky to have access to such fresh and high-quality ingredients here in Cornwall. The Chefs on the Quay event is a chance to showcase the best of Cornwall. But delicious ingredients are nothing without a skilled pair of hands and a creative mind. We’ve hand-picked some of the top talent in Cornish cuisine to show us all how it’s done.
Arty Williams – The Cove, Maenporth Beach
Arty is a Cornishman who, having worked in New Zealand and Australia, was keen to return home and champion Cornwall and its produce. The Cove Bar & Restaurant is located just opposite Maenporth Beach, Falmouth. Arty’s menu is based on the seasonal produce that is delivered daily to the restaurant. He will be opening the feast with a tasty amuse bouche.
Simon George – The Alverton Hotel
Simon moved to Cornwall 11 years ago after being head-hunted for his catering abilities and wouldn’t dream of moving elsewhere now. He is inspired by Cornwall’s offering of rich ingredients, and loves experimenting with food and creating exciting menus for The Alverton. Simon’s starter will tickle your taste buds, ready for the remaining courses.
Hylton Espey – Merchants Manor
Hylton has been a chef since 2002, starting out in Cape Town, South Africa. A true talent in the kitchen, he has earned Merchants Manor their third AA rosette this year. He claims his style of cuisine originates from Cornwall’s nature. He is inspired by the county’s gorgeous landscapes and rich heritage, incorporating flora and fauna elements to his dishes. Hylton will be whipping up some fresh fish as the third course.
Bobby Southworth – The Greenbank Hotel
Our very own head chef Bobby started his career in the kitchen at the age of 19. He describes his food as “flavourful, passionate and surprising”. If you have recently dined at our award-winning Water’s Edge restaurant, you will have sampled the delicious flavours of Bobby’s dishes. He’s your main man at Chefs on the Quay, responsible for satisfying your appetites with a mouth-watering main course.
Tom Hannon – The Rising Sun
With a passion for Cornish ingredients and seasonal produce, Tom encompasses these values into a versatile menu at The Rising Sun in Truro. Once a desolate pub, he has transformed The Rising Sun into a flourishing destination for quality food. Tom’s taking care of dessert and serving up something sweet.
Nick Hodges – Cornwall Hotel Collection
Nick started cooking when he was just fifteen years old. He trained under chef legends Keith Floyd and Jean Christophe Novelli. Throughout his career he has run restaurants at the Headland Hotel and The Rosevine, and taught at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Foundation. Now an Executive Chef of both The Greenbank Hotel in Falmouth and The Alverton Hotel in Truro, he adores cooking and the outdoors – the perfect combination for this event. Nick will be treating us all to a very special surprise course to conclude the banquet.
