Chefs on the Quay 2019: An Unforgettable Rustic Feast
the greenbank’s first chefs on the quay event
On Wednesday 14th August, our events marquee overlooking the harbour was transformed into a foodie’s haven. We welcomed talented chefs from the local area to whip up a dish each for a delicious six-course feast. Local ingredients were provided by our food sponsors WestCountry and Canara Farm. Cornish beer, provided by our drinks sponsors Sharp’s Brewery, were paired with each course. Everyone was in great spirits, and tucked into the banquet whilst singer-songwriter Mog Jones filled the tent with her beautiful, acoustic music.
raising money for charities in cornwall
The Chefs on the Quay event aimed to raise money for Cornwall Air Ambulance’s New Heli Appeal and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust. The evening began with speeches from Amy and Steph on behalf of Cornwall Air Ambulance, as well as chef Tom Hannon and his little girl, May, on behalf of the Neonatal Unit. The chefs then commenced cooking, as everyone settled in for a night of fine-dining and fun.
the cornish chefs
Teaming up to deliver top notch cuisine, we had Arty Williams from The Cove, Simon George and Billy Slinn from The Alverton, Hylton Espey and Aiden Blakely-May from Merchants Manor, our very own Nick Hodges and Bobby Southworth from The Greenbank Hotel, and Tom Hannon from The Rising Sun. Each chef prepared their own unique dish, showcasing their fabulous culinary skills.
amuse bouche – arty williams, the cove
Arty Williams kicked off the culinary experience with his tasty trio of crab. Hungry guests devoured the hot crab chowder, bruschetta topped with caviar, and crab sushi rolls with fresh ginger. It was the perfect dish to tease the tastebuds for the remaining five courses. Offshore Pilsner was the beer of choice to compliment the delicate flavours.
starter – simon george, the alverton
Simon George, Head Chef at our sister hotel The Alverton, was second to put his skills to the test. His starter did not disappoint, as he impressed everyone with a confit belly pork, black pudding, scallops and apple dish. The surf and turf inspired starter, washed down with Cornish amber ale, Doombar, was a hit!
fish – hylton espey, merchants manor
Hylton Espey took inspiration from the harbourside setting, and served up charred mackerel, cured and lined with elderflowers in a black garlic hoisin sauce with pickled cucumber. This fish dish was served with a side of rustic bread and truffled butter from sponsors Canara Farm, and matched with Chalky’s Bite, a brew created by Rick Stein and Sharp’s Brewery.
surprise course – nick hodges, the greenbank hotel
Our Executive Chef at The Greenbank, Nick Hodges treated everyone to a surprise course with Cornish oysters and his inventive beer flavoured sorbet with samphire. Needless to say, this course went down a treat, particularly for the seafood fans in the house.
main – bobby southworth, the greenbank hotel
For the main event, our Head Chef Bobby Southworth plated up a hearty beef and langoustine number, served with king prawns, potato gratin, pistachio, heritage carrots and cabbage. Everyone polished off the last of the savoury dishes, alongside the chosen beer, Wolf Rock.
DESSERT – TOM HANNON, THE RISING SUN
After five fantastic courses, it was time to end on something sweet from Tom Hannon. Cornish summer fruits, meringue, lemon curd, tutti frutti ice-cream and financier, served with Blue Moon beer, ended the feast superbly.
the charity auction
After indulging in some of the finest cuisine in the county, the evening concluded with a charity auction. There were some fabulous prizes to bid on, including local jewellery, three-course dinners at local restaurants, weekend breaks at Cornish hotels, a tour of the House of Commons, a ticket to Cornwall Air Ambulance’s Gala Ball in London – and many more! In total, we raised £2,115 from the auction alone. Cornwall Air Ambulance’s New Heli Appeal and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust will receive all profits from ticket sales and the money made at the auction. We will be tallying up the grand total raised and sharing soon!
a big thank you from us!
Thank you to everyone who bought tickets and helped to make this event such a huge success. We had a blast, and raised lots of money for charity along the way. Keep your eyes peeled for more of our charity events in Cornwall – as Chefs on the Quay will return once more!
