A day out with Abby around mystical Tintagel

Meet our Marketing Manager Abby, as she explores the iconic coastal village where history meets legend…

Where: 1 hour 30 minutes from The Greenbank

“Although I’m Cornish born and bred and am lucky to have travelled around the world, I’m ashamed to admit that there’s so much of my home county I still need to tick off my bucket list. So as the autumn season approaches and whilst it’s blissfully quiet in Cornwall, I’m making it my mission to squeeze in as much as I can.

The first on my hit list was the rugged north coast. On a sunny September Sunday, I headed to Tintagel and spent the day exploring the rocky clifftops. Firing the imagination of artists and writers, it’s easy to see why Tintagel is so inspirational. Woven with the legend of King Arthur, it’s the ultimate spot to immerse yourself in its history, myths and dramatic scenery.

I parked at the windswept Grebe Cliff (by the ancient church of St Materiana’s) and strolled towards the castle ruins on their own island. Owned by English Heritage, hours can be whiled away here.

After clambering the 148 steps back down and across the bridge to the mainland, the little cove located at the bottom of the valley boasts Merlin’s Cave (a 300ft long tunnel passing under the castle), a waterfall, and many rock pools ready for discovering.

Climbing past Barras Nose and strolling close to the imposing Camelot Castle Hotel, I snooped around the village itself which is chock-full with quirky shops, markets, pubs and ice-cream stopovers.

From here I drove to Boscastle, with its medieval harbour and mind-bogglingly crammed Museum of Witchcraft. Conveniently, Tintagel finds itself between Padstow and Bude – both worthy of day trips in their own right (and still on my to-do list!)”
